In the Yang family there was a daughter just grown, raised in a secluded boudoir, unknown to anyone. Born with a beauty that could not be hidden, one day she was chosen to stand beside the king. With one glance back and one smile, a hundred charms bloomed, and the powder and rouge of the Six Palaces lost all color.  In the spring chill she was granted a bath at Huaqing Pool; the smooth hot spring water washed her skin like凝脂. Her attendants helped lift her delicate, weakened body; only then had she newly begun to receive the emperor’s favor. Her cloudlike hair, flower-like face, and golden step-shaking ornaments; beneath the hibiscus-scented curtains, they passed the warm spring night. Spring nights were bitterly short, and when the sun rose high, from then on the king no longer held court early.  Enjoying favor at banquets and attending feasts left her no leisure; spring meant spring outings, and nights were devoted to her alone. Among the three thousand beauties of the harem, all three thousand affections rested on one body. In the golden house, she adorned herself and served by night; in the jade tower, after the banquet, they drank and enjoyed the spring. Her sisters and brothers were all granted fiefs, and the glory they brought to the household was truly enviable. Thus the hearts of parents throughout the world came to value daughters over sons.  The Li Palace rose high into the blue heavens; immortal music could be heard everywhere in the wind. Slow songs and gentle dances, with silk and bamboo strings trembling in harmony, were watched by the king all day without enough. Then the war drums of Yuyang rolled in, shaking the earth and shattering the melody of the Rainbow Feather Robe. Smoke and dust rose over the ninefold city gates as a thousand chariots and ten thousand riders moved southwest.  The imperial banner swayed as the procession moved and stopped, westward beyond the city gates by more than a hundred li.
